Message from Greg Jilka
Our guest Tuba player sent this to the band:
I want to thank Roy Davis and the members of the St. Johns Community Band
for allowing me the great honor of playing with you all during the Mint
Festival. St. Johns has a rich tradition of excellence in instrumental
music. While my father was band director from 1952 - 1962, I witnessed a
small part of the evolution of the St. Johns bands. I watched, and later
participated in the parades, the games, and the annual expeditions to
Interlochen. I started out on the recorder, spent a couple of years on
cornet and then graduated to Baritone all during my time as a kid in St.
Johns. Just last year, I got to the bottom of the brass by buying a tuba.
Now I can say that I have played all of those instruments in the St. Johns
bands.
Because of my connection with this past, it is very meaningful for me to
see the fine musicianship and dedication of you all. I am especially
impressed and gratified by Roy Davis’s excellence as a director. My thanks
and congratulations to you all.
